Superman Returns…..again!

The teaser trailer for the new Superman movie ‘Man of Steel’ was released the other day.

It doesn’t really tell us much about what to expect from the film. It certainly LOOKS different from the hero’s previous onscreen incarnations. It seems as though we’re moving away from the ‘boy scout’ image to a darker, more gritty (can you hear those words buzzing?) story.

When I heard Zach Snyder was in the running to direct it, I was wary. He has shown great skill in the past as a visual director. The effects work on both 300 and Watchmen are brilliant, but, neither of those films are high on my re-watch list. 300 was good but I couldn’t distinguish any of the characters from one another, while, Watchmen was just a beat by beat retelling of the graphic novel.

Christopher Nolan, in my opinion, is one of the finest film makers of our generation. He has the ability to tell an interesting story with minimal exposition without alienating the audience. The pieces are there, you have to finish the puzzle yourself. Inception left us with a 50-50 split between those who believed Cobb was still in the dream world and those who believed he had escaped. Throughout the film, we’re taught how to distinguish dreams from reality but still, there is no consensus in the debate instigated by the slight wobble of a spinning top.

The pairing of these two will be an interesting one. Nolan’s storytelling ability combined with Snyder’s visual flourishes could make this one to look out for. The teaser definitely shows that Snyder has been reigned in a little from his usual OTT style.

The final shot of Superman flying straight upwards, breaking the sound barrier felt a bit…meh. It seemed like it was put on to create excitement but it’s really nothing we haven’t seen before. We know he can fly, show us something different.

I really hope they do.
